‘Best Golf Instructor’
From the activegolf.com site, by ‘Eagle’:

I have been playing golf for the last 20 years. I started golf late in life. Over the course of time, I had the opportunity to take lessons from what the golf community considered the best of the best instructors. I read books on the golf swing and subscribed to golf magazines and membership sites, all with the objective of finding the perfect swing. I was searching for a repeatable swing and for instruction that made perfect sense. I wanted to understand the golf swing and cause and effect. I am very analytical, critical, rational and diligent in researching any topic. I would like to share with those of you who are still searching for a better golf swing that I have finally found the best and most knowledgeable golf teacher around . Dan Shauger in my opinion is a gifted instructor who understands the golf swing and can explain it better than any other person whom I know. I am really blessed to have read his material and taken lessons from him. I improved my golf striking abilities after only two lessons. I am not only able to strike the ball farther and straighter but I also now understand the game and have learned the real secrets to a repeatable and powerful swing. Dan also taught me secrets of the short game that make it so much easier to score from 80 yards in. I have seldomly in life recommended anything. I am very private. But in this case, I am touched by Dan's willingness to share with the golfing public years of work and discovery, a lot of it from Mike Austin. I did take lessons from Mike on a number of occasions. But I must admit that he was very difficult to understand at times and impatient to say the least. Dan is really gifted as a teacher. He is able to convey critical information exceptionally well. Trust me. Try him. You will never be the same again.

Just an FYI....

I have tried every other swing "method" out there and I'm amazed at how well this swing works for me. I know that everyone is different, and different ideas work for different people, but this is it for me. NO ONE EVER COULD EXPLAIN TO ME HOW TO USE MY LOWER BODY CORRECTLY!!! I've tried dozens of different swing thoughts to initiate the downswing and they have ALL been an exercise in futility. "Get your left hip out of the way", "turn your hips", "bump left, then drop", "rotate around a bent-over spine", etc., etc., etc. Although I have learned some good ideas along the way, nothing compares to how profound your instruction really is. I have never written a testimonial letter in my life, particularly to a golf instructor. The idea of using your lower body to drive the left arm into the ball is #@^*!! brilliant! "Flex the left, extend the right." "Compound action." The easier I swing, the farther, higher, and longer the shot. I was told to never slide my lower body to the right (swaying) on the backswing and felt like I was cheating on my wife when I tried it. However, this "rebel" golf swing is light-years ahead of its time. I still have some bugs to work out, like hooks and pushes, but only because I have not mastered the release and sometime get too aggressive from the top. Keep in mind I learned this from the DVD's and book. If I came out to see you I'd likely become dangerous on the golf course :-)

Senior Golfer
Mr. D. Mann - Australia, March 14, 2007

Many years ago when Mike Austin was a senior long-ball champ, he gave some tips in a magazine article on "How to hit the long ball" and said he could also show a senior golfer how to speed up his pivot and his hand action and not expend any more energy than before. He maintained that a golfer does not have to swing hard to get distance also that swinging the club too hard will throw you off balance. I have Dan Shauger's first book on Mike Austin's method-"How to Kill the Ball' and his DVDs but this new book gives tremendous detail to answer any possible questions on how to execute this amazing method of striking a golf ball with power and accuracy. Even though there may appear to be repetitive descriptions in the book, read everything thoroughly to get all of the pieces in place. Anyone who properly practices the stance and moves of the body, limbs and hands as intended, must improve as I have, which is great as I am over 70 years old. I wish this book had been available 20 or 30 years ago. I now have two great golf swing instructional books, both written by Dan Shauger. I am convinced that the other books I possess on how to play golf are obsolete.

C Dan,

Congratulations on completing the 10 DVD's of instruction. I watched each of them enthusiastically. I'm amazed how you get across to you audience everything that you know on the subject for that particular DVD. Your earnestness to help in every way possible comes across. Please accept this handshake across cyberspace on a job well done.

Dan,

Very, very, very good, the 10 DVD set is great. There is a ton of info in there. I started golfing over 40 years ago, never had I shot a round in the 70's, this last year I had over 10 rounds in the 70's and that was after
only 1 year of your videos, cant wait to see this year after praticing all winter at the range and working on my swing at home. The videos are great, I cant say enough about it. I really think your idea about you showing people of different levels taking lessons from you would be a great idea. i think it was DVD #6 that showed you helping that one guy. That DVD helped me in a few areas too. I just wanted to thank you, keep the videos coming I love them ...

Dan;

just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the DVD's and gotten a lot out of them. The only thing I can compare them to is the Austinology tapes, these DVD's make things much clearer and are better than any lessons I have ever had. They are well worth the money . I would advise anyone who really wants to understand the swing to buy these DVD's. keep up the good work.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for keeping in touch.

I watched your 3rd DVD about the "little club" and the twirl this week. After practicing with the little club on the motion of winding and unwinding the right forearm, I hit some of the smoothest, highest, most beautiful shots ever on the driving range.

Took it to the course yesterday and hit a few wild balls. I would suspect that is because when you wind the forearm up you must truly start the club down about 30 degrees to the right and then trust your pivot to get you back to square at impact. Also, it seems that winding up the right forearm promotes a natural tendency to cup the left wrist, and I need to work on not letting that happen, keeping the left wrist slightly bowed.

The good news is that I still firmly believe that I have a clear grasp of what I want the club to do through the impact zone. No other teacher has ever made this clear to me before. It was always some sort of mumbo jumbo about holding your angle and performing a "late" release but not ever explaining WHAT the release was. With the Dan Shauger approach to teaching, nothing is left to chance. And, you don't have to consciously think about holding on to the angle for a "late" release because it is all "built-in" to the overall swing paradigm.

I'm looking forward to your next dvd that goes in-depth about the pivot and more thoroughly cementing my image of what I need to look and feel like in the downswing.

Sincerely,

Steve Branch

Dan:
I've taken lessons from a lot of Pro's over the years in my seemingly unending quest to learn this mercurial movement called The Golf Swing. I think I may have mentioned I had a casual friendship with Mike Austin from my many years of practicing at the Studio City Driving Range. There was a time in the late 70's that Ed Merrins invited me to Bel Air and imparted his knowledge to me. I even gave Natural Golf a good chance at one time. Never before have I experienced a teacher that was willing to "tell it all" until having the good fortune to see and feel your teachings. I knew all the other Pro's were holding something back but not you and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that. I fall into that large group of people that love this game but find not one thing about it that's innate. I and many other's in that group of seekers have been in kind with Cortez or Cabeza de Vaca and we've finally come upon that lost city of gold. Who knew it would look like Danny Shauger.

Hi Dan,
I've been familiar with the traditional method all PGA certified pros have thought. All i can say about it is that they were popular that's why you see PGA tour players using different variation of this method. In fact my golf company used to sell unlimited golf lessons professing this method. However after learning about the Mike Austin Method I was really frustrated how the world came to know the other side of the fence and not this side. It is truly the 21st century golf swing. For a fact, all the method that you read and learned about were all based on experience of the greatest people whoever played the game. Unfortunately their talent can't be passed to us unless we were born with it. On the other hand the Mike Austin method was designed for the Human body to swing the club properly thus yielding better results and we are talking about easy to repeat results. Gone are the notion that a golf swing needs impeccable timing, this swing does not need timing.

Thanks to people like Mr Dan Shauger refining the way to communicate this method to regular Joe's like us.

On the sad note not all the instructors will agree to what we do on this swing because of several factors and the biggest of them is their EGOS:D. However if people like us work together and tell the world that we can be as long as they are and straighter than the rest of them, probably down the line this swing will be open in the mainstream. In my own small way i will teach this method to my Son whom i hope someday will kick A-- on tour, I'm also vocal about this swing to all my struggling friends in the links and try to convince them stop reading whats being published and start learning this swing.

With Dan's method you won't go wrong with MA swing. I just hope that within the next 5 years will see a major champion who advocates this swing. In fact if i only have the resources to do so I don't mind spending a fortune to someone whose talented enough to use this method on tour.

God Bless to this method and PLEASE DAN don't stop advocating this method!

Great Golf Swing - Distance and Accuracy
February 8, 2007Reviewer: Michael Tillison (Colorado) -

A great follow-on book to "How to Kill the Ball". Teaches an athletic swing with distance and accuracy that is easy on the body. Seniors will love this method. Get the books and DVDs, work on the swing and you will continually thank yourself as you hit the ball further and further and staighter with little effort. At a pro tournament last year I was amazed at the different sound their ball makes coming off their drivers at the range. I'm now generating the same sound and results with this swing! In my opinion is that Dan is the number 1 golf teacher in the world! I will be forever grateful.

A Golf Book lLike No Other
January 24, 2007
Reviewer: Dr. SE GREEN (Australia)

Congratultions Mr Shauger. Between this and your previous book "How to Kill The Ball", you are revolutionising the golf swing. I am a medical doctor with an interest in biomechanics and a passion for golf. I am disillusioned with the inconsistency of the traditional golf swing . Even top professional golfers struggle to consistently hit fairways and greens.

When I discovered that Mike Austin hit the ball far further than any man in history, I researched his method. It is unique. Shauger describes this method and has added some amazingly effective refinements. The book describes this method in great detail. My only criticism is a degree of repetition. This may be justified because of the vast difference to the traditional method. It has now fallen into place, and a friend (with whom I'm studying this method) and myself are hitting the ball straighter and further than ever.

HOW TO KILL THE BALL
March 9, 2007. Reviewer: Gaines E. Bruce, Knoxville, TN

Really helps understand some important aspects of the Mike Austin swing,

I have had the peace river tape for about four years. Until I read this book, I never really fully comprehended the throwing the club intricacies. After reading this book and ordering the accompaning DVD, I finally tried out the swing at the driving range last night. I really enjoyed the crack sound of the driver as the ball took off. I am eagerly anticipating taking this swing to the course and further perfecting the swing over the next few months.

The Only Way to Play Golf!
February 8, 2007

Reviewer: Michael Tillison "Michael" (Colorado)

I've been playing golf for 40 years and as I've gotten into my 50s I've lost distance and the game was becoming difficult. I was about ready to give up the game when I discovered Dan's book. I've been working on the swing as taught in the book for about 5 months now and the difference is amazing. Driver from weak 225 yards to booming 275 in the air. 150 yard club from 6 iron to 9 iron. This swing's release makes accuracy easy. This swing is very easy on the body. His follow-on book "The 21st Century Golf Swing" expands on the swing principles. If you want to get good at this game, get the books and DVDs and spend some time! You will be delighted.

Long Time Golfer
D. Mann - Australia, January 15, 2007
Reviewer: Mr. D. Mann, Q'ld, Australia

I first read about Mike Austin's ability in a golf tips magazine years ago when he was 68. Whilst he gave a brief summary of action to hit the ball far then, the detail was insufficient to adopt his method. I was delighted to learn of publications about his swing, via the internet and have "How to Kill the Ball-etc. My 70 years of age may be considered too late for swing change but less back strain and more efficient use of the legs and body to produce better trajectory with longer more accurate ball flight is coming from the information detailed in this book. Perhaps the editorial standard could have been better but i believe any purchaser should simply ignore that and concentrate on the instruction given by the author Dan Shauger on the way Mike Austin so effectively hit the golf ball. For those who have never heard of Mike Austin and his unbeaten long distance driving record, this is simply great instruction worth acquiring.

Recommend Highly
January 10, 2007
Reviewer: Herbert Humphries, Jr., Monroe, North Carolina USA

I am a low handicap golfer, having played the game for over 40 years (53 yrs. old). I constantly work on my strength and flexibility to try and maintain a semblance of my youthful distance and scoring ability. With conventional instruction, I just seemed to be spinning my wheels. The "Mike Austin Method" as described and taught by Dan Shauger has got me excited about golf again! The character and trajectory of my shots when I "get it right" is truly amazing--the ball travels like it was shot out of a cannon!! It's winter, and it seems every day I have off, it's raining; so I've only been able to hit balls a few times since I've adapted the method, but I'm very excited about the season ahead.

His website will update you on his seminars and other instructional materials available. The DVDs are a very helpful aid in understanding the concept. Read this book with a golf club by your side, or better yet, order his mini-club from his website. I instructed one of my friends on his method on the range the other day. I had him hitting shots with a character he had never experienced within a few short minutes. Guess what--he's got his copy of the book now--emails me every couple days on his progress. He's excited about the concept now and No back strain!

---He had chronic back problems with his old conventional swing. I could rant all day so just do yourself a favor and order the book. Take your time to digest it cover to cover--in the order presented, before trying to apply it to your game.

Clarifying Some Confusion
October 1, 2006 Reviewer: Jaacob Bowden, Carmel, CA USA

I want to comment on the contradiction pointed out between Dan's book and other reference materials about Mike Austin's swing.

For example, the Austinology tapes and the Peaceriver tapes both indicate Austin rolled the club through impact...which he did before his stroke. Dan's materials mention a counter-rotation of the wrists in order to keep the club squarer longer. This contradiction is because in the last several years of his life (after his stroke and after he made all his other materials) Austin changed his viewpoints on how the hands should work. Dan's teachings do indeed refect the most current method that Mike taught. But unless you were actually physically with Mike during that time period like I was, you might think think that Dan's materials are incorrect. I hope this helps clarify the discrepancy.

Also, having personally known both Dan and Austin, I can vouch for Dan's tremendous understanding of how Austin swung. Dan was a close personal friend of Austin's for around 20 years, is a fantastic teacher, and his knowledge of Austin's swing is second to none in my opinion. His book does have grammatical errors, however I encourage everyone to look past the appearance and presentation of the materials, and dig in and actually digest what Dan says. There is great value to be found within. :-)

Not Contradictory
October 16, 2005
Reviewer: Joseph Mason, Shoreline, WA USA

The book has a few unfortunate editorial errors in it, but overall it is an impressive explanation of a truly unique golf swing. The claim by another reviewer saying this material has been covered before in "Search for the Perfect Swing" by Cochran and Stobbs is not accurate. That book discusses very briefly a hinged wrist motion that is not the same as Shauger explains. The counter rotating wrist action described in "How to Kill the Ball" puts the club face on a completely different swing plane than the double pendulum motion discussed by Cochran and Stobbs. Further Shauger discusses in a fair amount of detail the twirling of the wrist in a "spinning of the meatballs" action that is not in "Search for the Perfect Swing".

If you read Philip Reed's, "In Search of the Greatest Swing" it is clear that Mike Austin developed the hinged wrist and club twirling method. This method is different than the method Mike Austin taught in the past in collaboration with Mike Dunaway. Dan Shauger is teaching the later developed system.

My personal experience with learning this method is a positive one. It is not prone to lost balls and hitting fat, those occur when the swing circle moves before hitting the ball or an improper pivot motion. When executed correctly the ball goes dead straight with a long and high carry. When you feel the club head release through the ball you know it is go and go.

The Hinged Release with Left Arm Counter Rotation Works Well
August 4, 2005
Reviewer: Steve Cobb, Seattle, WA

This book is an instructional guide to the swing technique of legendary long driver Mike Austin, and his champion proteges Mike Dunaway and Jaacob Bowden. The swing, while unorthodox in several ways, appears very "normal" at speed, so no worries about looking goofy.

I've been working on it for a couple weeks now. I'm very happy with the Austin release action and counter rotation of the left forearm. It is much more comfortable than the conventional "baseball" rollover release. More importantly, I have much less unplanned curvature in my shots now. (Note: The neutral grip position happens to match what I was using before. It may feel more unusual to those coming from stronger grips.)

I'm docking the book a star for general lack of editing polish. It has a home-published feel, many misspelled words, and the diagrams could be greatly improved by an artist. The information itself, however, is excellent. It's well thought out with plenty of detail, and fairly well organized.

Hi Dan — Can't thank you enough for all the help this past week. You cleared up some key points for me.

Before i left on Friday, i was starting to really get it...throughout the bag....hit the back net on the fly three or four times...if that is only 260 I'd be surprised....but it could be the balls just don't carry off the driver......though my pure 9 irons were flying over that 148 yd green......and everything seemed very effortless..... i know it will seep into my swing more and more and my speed will get better.

Take good care... Joel Waldman

The ball flight is higher and straighter. Dear Dan — I read or watch everything that comes out just for fun and ocassionally see something that that re-inforces something I knew but hadn't given sufficient weight or rarely bump into something that makes me think and change my interpretation.

I am a physician so understand anatomy and physics and have helped many many golfers to understand and improve their "classic" golf swings. If I could afford to, I would quit medicine and get involved with golf teaching.

I give all of this background because I am astounded by what I saw. I had no idea how revolutionary this is.Your swing in addition to using the wrists completely differently (not to mention the weight shift) doesn't use a lifting of the arms which trying to force has given me nightmares. I was so stunned I don't know if I even saw everything on the tape, but the LATE unwinding of the mid-body is brilliant.

Anyway I write to thank you for your efforts I give you great credit for turning Mr. Austins words into something concrete in just a few minutes. I remember him discussing the weight shifts and head position just like you do, but when he said throw the clubhead I really had no idea what he meant and I didn't get the impression of the unique motions of the wrists and elbows from him.

Thankyou for giving me a whole new process to explore. I won't bother you further unless I take the plunge and find myself a plus three and then you can use me for a testimonial. — George Petro

You Can Kill It and Still Find It!
Rocky Kinsey (rock28man@aol.com)

For more than 10 years I have been in search of a better way to hit the golf ball. I have trained under several well know techniques and with nationally known teaching pros. My search is over. In How to Kill the Ball Dan Shauger makes power possible for anyone willing to spend the time to learn the Mike Austin method. Dan lays out in great detail all you need to know to hit the greatest golf shots of your life. Not only will you have more power than you ever felt possible, the ball flies straight and true. In three months of working with Dan's book and the Mike Austin techniques my ball striking is better than I ever dreamed it could be. In the past I have tried unsuccessfully to play some of the mini tours in Florida. In the past my swing has not held up under the pressure. In three months my shot making and scoring are becoming more and more consistent and I am breaking new ground everyday. I know I will continue to improve and pursue my dream of playing professional golf. In closing I want to add that I have hit three drives over 340 yards and seen the yardages of all my irons go up as well. If you order this book and follow its principles you will not believe what will happen in your golf swing. Good Luck and Hit IT LONGGGGGERRRRRRRRRRR

A Must Read For Any Serious Golfer
Reviewer: Peter Bampton, Richmond, VA

How to "Kill" the Ball is the most complete explaination of how to generate power and accuracy in the golf swing. This is a huge undertaking, and Dan Shauger has a definte "hole in one"!

After reading this book, I finally "got" the golf swing . My pitching wedge immediately went from 100 yards to 110 yards. After six months, I am hitting my pitching wedge 130 yards. Don't kid yourself, turning understanding into a golf swing takes time and effort. However, Dan is helpful and will answer your questions. This book is a complete recipe for creating a powerful and accurate swing. I would recommend that you also purchase the accompaning DVD to see the concept in action. Being that golf swing is three dimensional, the video gives an excellent supplement to the book's instruction.

Kudos to Dan Shauger
Reviewer: John Marshall

I am a professional long drive competitor and am always looking for ways to hit longer and more solid shots. I purchased Dan Shauger's book last fall and was blown away by how unique his method is compared to everything I've ever read and learned about the golf swing. In Dan's swing you break many of the cardinal rules of the swing that have been preached for centuries. In my case, I gave the method a try and am now hitting longer, straigher drives consistently. Since studying the method I have become the National Super Senior long driving Champion for two consecutive years.

A lot of teaching in here that I've never seen before or that goes against most "conventional" wisdom. Directions are clearly explained. Examples are clear throughout and quite comprehensive. Learning is presented in a way that makes sense (start small, building skills gradually) and that also works for short game (chipping and pitching).

The DVD by the same name makes a great companion piece.

Can't give it five stars (yet) because I haven't taken it out to the range and given myself time to absorb it.

Brillant, Well Thought Out, Simply Outstanding Work
Reviewer: Rosser "001" "Chaz" (Michigan)

How to Kill the Ball, by Dan Shauger. Well lets start by saying Thanks Dan! Bravo. You are the only one that has brought the Austin method to the fore front. I have known Mike Austin for some time now, and he is a tough cookie to break for the real truth of the golf swing, and you have done an outstanding job of showing through illustration, words and pictures.

You are the only one that I have found that truly knows this Method, and the more I read this book, the more I know that you are the one that I would trust with my swing to learn this method. I can say this read was very enjoyable, fun and brought back a few laughs that I had with my talks with Mike Austin. Your words where chosen splendidly, through out the book. The truth be told, this method as good as it get, breaks ground from the old traditional method that has plagued so many into the wrongs of how to swing a golf club.

What I find so unique is that you leave everyone the opportunity to speak to you or email you for any help one might need, that is rare, and you are to be commended. I have heard your pupil Jaacob has been granted sponsorship for one of the tours, nice work. Nobody said it was going to be easy, only with this method you now have the rights to the correct way to swing a golf club. So much confidence one will gain from your book and from your on going assistance. You are truly a special person, Thanks a million. You have made my job so much easier. Peace my friend.

Hit Two Drives Over 300 Yards!

I read the book and looked at the DVD. I thought you might be interested in this. For 30 years I’ve been fighting rotating my arms the way you say I need to! For whatever reason, rotating the way you teach feels natural to me.

I finally got the pivot down (or at least close) and played yesterday.
Hit two drives over 300 yards (verified by the GPS)! My usual distance was around 230-240.

Thanks for the great instruction! I feel like I finally have a swing that will get better with practice – not worse – and the immediate results have been incredible! — Jim

Danny, — Just a short note to say thanks for the lesson and the extra time you spent a couple of weeks ago. I had to get back to Durango, so I didn't have a chance to stop for a follow-up on my way back. I did try to incorporate the swing into my iron game when I played at the Presidio course in SF. On a par three I hit a seven iron with the Austin swing (purely accidental) and it took off flew higher than I have ever hit a seven iron and it landed in the center of the green. When I got up there there was my crater/ball mark and the ball had spun back about 8 feet. That's a first...never even done that with a sand wedge. Anyway, I hope it's a sign of more to come after I can practice this swing.

I'll let you know when I get to LA again - I'd really like to get another session in this summer. Keep up the good work and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you market your book/dvd. All the best,

Mike Carlton

Hi Dan — Well, my swing keeps improving. I'm just starting to get the release timed and when I do, the results are incredible. I really like the movement you teach and wouldn't go back - it's much easier - I'm trying to figure out an excuse to come out your way (I'm in Houston) and get a lesson. Thanks, — Jim Owen

Dear Dan — Your book and DVD are great. I've reduced by rounds by 8 to 10 stroke in just two weeks. Thanks — Richard Munsterman

Dan — I wanted to let you know that I shot a 33 today on a short par 31 nine hole course (Rancho Duarte). Now driving the ball 260 (I'm 5'7", 125 lbs. right now). Distance with accuracy! My best ever. With two birdies! THANKS so much — Tony Ragland

Hi Dan — Last night I spent some time working on keeping the face square to the arc as it rotates and I noticed something!!! After the initial takeaway (when the clubhead reaches approximately hip height) the head started to rotate around the shaft and open up relative to the arc. WOW!! Stopping at the top to look at the face position I became aware of just how much bow in the left wrist is necessary to keep the face square to the arc.

I tried out this new position with a 7 iron and could not believe I could hit it so flush. I actually (for the first time) had the sensation of throwing the club down the target line with my right hand. I actually thought I could "make" a 7 iron shot from 165. Had 4 balls within 3 feet of the hole. Thanks again! — Tom Nichol

Thanks Dan — I had my first opportunity to try the Mike Austin Method at the range today (I have been practicing for several days indoors), and I saw an immediate improvement in both my driver and irons. I think that this may finally end my journey (it has been a very long one) for a swing method that both works and fits me. I will order the combo tomorrow and I will give you an update on my results in a few weeks. — Thanks again, John

Hi Dan — It's been 2 weeks since I committed myself to Mike Austin's methodology & surprisingly, I am still on the path to Killing the golf ball.I have been playing for 46 years & have maintained a 5 handicap. When I first took up the game I read "square to square in pictures" which advocated a curling under of the last 3 fingers of the left hand. I grooved this move perfectly which subsequently closed the clubface etc. This move became an unconscious move which I could not eliminate! (a la Charles Barkley) My misses were either pulled low left or thin right. Voila your book condones and applauds this action. So far my ball flight has become significantly higher for my short irons with a 5-8 yard increase in distance(driver increase 10-15 yds)
